2026 Jeep Wrangler
2027 Rivian R2

Safety

In the past twenty years hundreds of infants and young children have died after being left in vehicles, usually by accident. When turning the vehicle off, drivers of the Wrangler 4-Door are reminded to check the back seat if they opened the rear door before starting out. The R2 doesn’t offer a back seat reminder.

To provide maximum traction and stability on all roads, Full-Time Four-Wheel Drive is standard on the Wrangler. But it costs extra on the R2.

Both the Wrangler and the R2 have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, side-impact head airbags, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, rearview cameras, available crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, blind spot warning systems, rear parking sensors and rear cross-path warning.

Warranty

There are almost 24 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Rivian dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Wrangler’s warranty.

Reliability

The Wrangler has a solid front axle with a floating power axle for durability that the R2 4x4’s independent front suspension and exposed front driveshafts don’t offer.

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Wrangler second among compact suvs in their 2025 Initial Quality Study. The R2 isn’t in the top three in its category.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Rivian vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 88 more problems per 100 vehicles, Rivian is rated below average.

From surveys of all its subscribers, Consumer Reports’ March 2026 Auto Issue reports that Jeep vehicles are more reliable than Rivian vehicles. Consumer Reports ranks Jeep 2 places higher in reliability than Rivian.

Fuel Economy and Range

An engine control system that can shut down some of the engine’s cylinders helps improve the Wrangler 392’s fuel efficiency. The R2 doesn’t offer a system that can shut down part of the engine.

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Wrangler 4-door Moab 392/Xteme 35’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the R2 (315/70R17 vs. 265/60R20).

The Wrangler Sahara 4Xe’s tires provide better handling because they have a lower 55 series profile (height to width ratio) that provides a stiffer sidewall than the R2’s 60 series tires.

The Wrangler has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The R2 doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

Suspension and Handling

The Wrangler Rubicon has an active front sway bar, which helps keep it flat and controlled during cornering, but disconnects at lower speeds to smooth the ride and offer greater off-road suspension articulation. This helps keep the tires glued to the road on-road and off. The R2 doesn’t offer an active sway bar system.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Wrangler 4-door’s wheelbase is 2.8 inches longer than on the R2 (118.4 inches vs. 115.6 inches).

For better maneuverability, the Wrangler 2-door’s turning circle is 7 feet tighter than the R2’s (32.7 feet vs. 39.7 feet). The Wrangler 4-door 4Xe’s turning circle is .8 feet tighter than the R2’s (38.9 feet vs. 39.7 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Wrangler 2-door has a greater minimum ground clearance than the R2 (9.7 vs. 9.6 inches), allowing the Wrangler to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Wrangler Rubicon 4-door Xtreme 35’s minimum ground clearance is 3.3 inches higher than on the R2 (12.9 vs. 9.6 inches).

Chassis

The Jeep Wrangler may be more efficient, handle and accelerate better because it weighs up to about 850 pounds less than the Rivian R2.

Cargo Capacity

The Wrangler 4-door has a much larger cargo volume than the R2 with its rear seat up (31.7 vs. 28.7 cubic feet).

The Wrangler’s standard rear cargo window opens separately from the rest of the left swing out door to allow quicker loading of small packages. A separately opening cargo window is only available on the R2 Premium/Performance.

Payload and Towing

Maximum trailer towing in the Rivian R2 is limited to 4400 pounds. The Wrangler 4-door offers up to a 5000 lbs. towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Wrangler uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The R2 doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

The Wrangler has a higher standard payload capacity than the R2 (1218 vs. 1102 lbs.).

The Wrangler has a higher maximum payload capacity than the R2 (1327 vs. 1168 lbs.).

Ergonomics

To improve rear visibility by keeping the rear window clear, the Wrangler has a standard rear wiper. The R2 doesn’t offer a rear wiper.

Model Availability

The Jeep Wrangler JL comes in four door and soft top bodystyles; the Rivian R2 isn’t available as a soft top.

Recommendations

Motor Trend selected the Wrangler as their 2019 Sport Utility of the Year. The R2 has never been chosen.
