A passive infrared night vision system optional on the Grand Cherokee Limited Reserve/Summit helps the driver to more easily detect people, animals or other objects in front of the vehicle at night. Using an infrared camera to detect heat, the system then displays the image on a monitor in the dashboard. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a night vision system.

Both the Grand Cherokee and the Crown Signia have standard driver and passenger frontal airbags, front side-impact airbags, driver and front passenger knee airbags, side-impact head airbags, front and rear seatbelt pretensioners, height adjustable front shoulder belts, four-wheel antilock brakes, traction control, electronic stability systems to prevent skidding, crash mitigating brakes, daytime running lights, lane departure warning systems, blind spot warning systems, rearview cameras, rear cross-path warning, available all wheel drive, around view monitors and driver alert monitors.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does 35 MPH front crash tests on new vehicles. In this test, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Toyota Crown Signia:

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration does side impact tests on new vehicles. In this test, which crashes the vehicle into a flat barrier at 38.5 MPH and into a post at 20 MPH, results indicate that the Jeep Grand Cherokee is safer than the Toyota Crown Signia:

Warranty

There are almost 2 times as many Jeep dealers as there are Toyota dealers, which makes it much easier should you ever need service under the Grand Cherokee’s warranty.

Reliability

To reliably start during all conditions and help handle large electrical loads, the Grand Cherokee has a standard 850-amp battery (900 2.0 Hurricane). The Crown Signia’s 600-amp battery isn’t as powerful.

J.D. Power and Associates’ 2025 Initial Quality Study of new car owners surveyed provide the statistics that show that Jeep vehicles are better in initial quality than Toyota vehicles. J.D. Power ranks Jeep above average in initial quality. With 14 more problems per 100 vehicles, Toyota is rated below average.

Engine

The Grand Cherokee Laredo’s standard 3.6 DOHC V6 produces 53 more horsepower (293 vs. 240) than the Crown Signia’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid. The Grand Cherokee’s optional 2.0 turbo 4-cylinder produces 84 more horsepower (324 vs. 240) than the Crown Signia’s 2.5 DOHC 4-cylinder hybrid.

As tested in Consumer Reports the Grand Cherokee Laredo V6 is faster than the Toyota Crown Signia:

Fuel Economy and Range

Both the Grand Cherokee and Crown Signia have a standard automatic start/stop engine feature to stop unnecessary fuel waste and pollution at stoplights and heavy traffic. The Grand Cherokee has a standard disable switch for the system, so a driver can keep the engine from shutting off when the vehicle stops temporarily.

The Grand Cherokee has 8.5 gallons more fuel capacity than the Crown Signia (23 vs. 14.5 gallons), for longer range between fill-ups.

The Grand Cherokee has a standard cap-less fueling system. The fuel filler is automatically opened when the fuel nozzle is inserted and automatically closed when it’s removed. This eliminates the need to unscrew and replace the cap and it reduces fuel evaporation, which causes pollution. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a cap-less fueling system.

Brakes and Stopping

For better stopping power the Grand Cherokee’s brake rotors are larger than those on the Crown Signia:

Tires and Wheels

For better traction, the Grand Cherokee has larger standard tires than the Crown Signia (265/60R18 vs. 225/55R19). The Grand Cherokee Summit’s tires are larger than the largest tires available on the Crown Signia (275/45R21 vs. 235/45R21).

The Grand Cherokee has a standard easy tire fill system. When inflating the tires, the vehicle’s integrated tire pressure sensors keep track of the pressure as the tires fill and tell the driver when the tires are inflated to the proper pressure. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer vehicle monitored tire inflation.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional full size spare tire so a flat doesn’t interrupt your trip. A full size spare isn’t available on the Crown Signia; it requires you to depend on roadside assistance and your vehicle will have to be towed.

Suspension and Handling

The Grand Cherokee offers an available driver-adjustable suspension system. It allows the driver to choose between an extra-supple ride, reducing fatigue on long trips, or a sport setting, which allows maximum control for tricky roads or off-road. The Crown Signia’s suspension doesn’t offer adjustable shock absorbers.

The Grand Cherokee offers an optional automatic front and rear load leveling suspension to keep ride height level with a heavy load or when towing. The Grand Cherokee’s height leveling suspension allows the driver to raise ride height for better off-road clearance and then lower it again for easier entering and exiting and better on-road handling. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a load leveling suspension.

For a smoother ride and more stable handling, the Grand Cherokee’s wheelbase is 4.5 inches longer than on the Crown Signia (116.7 inches vs. 112.2 inches).

For better handling and stability, the track (width between the wheels) on the Grand Cherokee is 2.4 inches wider in the front and 2.3 inches wider in the rear than the average track on the Crown Signia.

For better maneuverability, the Grand Cherokee’s turning circle is 1.5 feet tighter than the Crown Signia’s (38 feet vs. 39.5 feet).

For greater off-road capability the Grand Cherokee has a 1.7 inches greater minimum ground clearance than the Crown Signia (8.4 vs. 6.7 inches), allowing the Grand Cherokee to travel over rougher terrain without being stopped or damaged. The Grand Cherokee Summit’s minimum ground clearance is 4.2 inches higher than on the Crown Signia (10.9 vs. 6.7 inches).

Chassis

The front grille of the Grand Cherokee uses electronically controlled shutters to close off airflow and reduce drag when less engine cooling is needed. This helps improve highway fuel economy. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer active grille shutters.

The Grand Cherokee Altitude/Limited/Summit uses computer-generated active noise cancellation to help remove annoying noise and vibration from the passenger compartment, especially at low frequencies. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer active noise cancellation.

Passenger Space

The Grand Cherokee has .8 inches more front headroom, 2.7 inches more front hip room, 2.2 inches more front shoulder room, .5 inches more rear headroom, 1.1 inches more rear legroom, 8.6 inches more rear hip room and 3 inches more rear shoulder room than the Crown Signia.

For enhanced passenger comfort on long trips the Grand Cherokee’s rear seats recline. The Crown Signia’s rear seats don’t recline.

Cargo Capacity

The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat up than the Crown Signia with its rear seat up (37.7 vs. 25.8 cubic feet). The Grand Cherokee has a much larger cargo volume with its rear seat folded than the Crown Signia with its rear seat folded (70.8 vs. 68.8 cubic feet).

The Grand Cherokee’s cargo area is larger than the Crown Signia’s in almost every dimension:

Towing

The Grand Cherokee’s standard towing capacity is much higher than the Crown Signia’s (3500 vs. 2700 pounds). Maximum trailer towing in the Toyota Crown Signia is only 2700 pounds. The Grand Cherokee offers up to a 6200 lbs. towing capacity.

Standard Trailer Sway Control on the Grand Cherokee uses the Electronic Stability Control sensors to detect trailer sway, then uses individual brakes to counteract any swaying and help keep the tow vehicle and trailer steady. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer electronic trailer sway control.

Servicing Ease

The Grand Cherokee uses gas struts to support the hood for easier service access. The Crown Signia uses a prop rod to support its heavy hood. It takes two hands to open the hood and set the prop rod, the prop rod gets in the way during maintenance and service, and the prop rod could be knocked out, causing the heavy hood to fall on the person maintaining or servicing the car.

The engine in the Grand Cherokee is mounted longitudinally (North-South), instead of sideways, as in the Crown Signia. This makes it easier to service and maintain, because the accessory belts are in front.

Ergonomics

Unlike the driver-only memory seat and mirrors in the Crown Signia, the Grand Cherokee Summit has a passenger memory, so that when drivers switch, the memory setting adjusts the driver’s seat, steering wheel position (with optional power wheel adjuster), outside mirror angle and radio stations and the front passenger seat also adjusts to the new passenger’s preset preferences.

The Grand Cherokee’s instruments include an oil pressure gauge and a temperature gauge - which could save your engine! Often ‘idiot lights’ don’t warn you until damage has been done. The Crown Signia does not have an oil pressure gauge.

The Grand Cherokee Limited Reserve/Summit offers an optional heads-up display that projects speed, tachometer, certain gauge and navigation instruction readouts in front of the driver’s line of sight, allowing drivers to view information without diverting their eyes from the road. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a heads-up display.

To help drivers avoid possible obstacles, the Grand Cherokee Summit has standard cornering lights to illuminate around corners when the turn signals are activated. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer cornering lights.

Manual rear side window sunshades are available in the Grand Cherokee to help block heat and glare for the rear passengers. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer rear side window sunshades.

The Grand Cherokee’s optional rear and side view mirrors have an automatic dimming feature. These mirrors can be set to automatically darken quickly when headlights shine on them, keeping following vehicles from blinding or distracting the driver. The Crown Signia has an automatic rear view mirror, but its side mirrors don’t dim.

The Grand Cherokee Limited Reserve/Trailhawk/Summit has standard front air conditioned seats and the Grand Cherokee Summit also has them in the rear. This keeps the passengers comfortable and takes the sting out of hot seats in summer. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer air-conditioned seats in the rear.

The Grand Cherokee Summit has standard massaging front seats in order to maximize comfort and eliminate fatigue on long trips. Massaging seats aren’t available in the Crown Signia.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee stands out above the Toyota Crown Signia by offering not one, but two Qi-compatible phone chargers. This convenience helps travelers with multiple devices to keep powered up on-the-go. Wireless charging eliminates lost or cluttered charging cables and one of them provide more flexibility.

The Grand Cherokee Laredo X/Altitude/Limited/Summit has a 115-volt a/c outlet on the center console, allowing you to recharge a laptop or run small household appliances without special adapters that can break or get misplaced. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a house-current electrical outlet.

The Grand Cherokee Summit’s Parallel and Perpendicular Park Assist can parallel park or back into a parking spot by itself, with the driver only controlling speed with the brake pedal. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer an automated parking system.

Model Availability

The Grand Cherokee is available in both rear-wheel drive and four-wheel drive configurations. The Crown Signia doesn’t offer a two-wheel drive configuration.

Recommendations

J.D. Power and Associates rated the Grand Cherokee third among midsize SUVs in owner reported satisfaction. This includes how well the vehicle performs and satisfies its owner’s expectations. The Crown Signia isn’t in the top three.

The Jeep Grand Cherokee outsold the Toyota Crown Signia by over 10 to one during 2025.
